Beginning Spinning @ The Clearing

Spend a week of peaceful fun learning the art of hand spinning! Turn wool and other animal and plant fibers into your own yarns for knitting, weaving and more. You will learn about different wool breeds, washing, hand carding, drum carding, and spinning single and multi-ply yarns. We will introduce elements of yarn design so you can understand how to design and spin your own unique yarns. We will incorporate an introduction to dyeing into the week and learn to work with color. Spinning wheels and all related equipment will be available for your use. You will have the opportunity to try out many different spinning wheels throughout the week which will help you learn what kind of a wheel is best suited for you. Students may bring their own spinning wheels if they are completely assembled and in perfect operating condition. Please, no antique wheels.

Dyer's Workshop

A new approach to dyeing classes by letting YOU create your own agenda for the weekend. You will choose your class length and what you will study during the class.  Some possibilities include dyeing silks; rainbow dyeing yarns and rovings; painted yarns; dyeing cellulose fibers (cotton, bamboo); dyeing socks, shoelaces, scarves, shawls, quilt squares …the sky is the limit!  You will learn from what others are doing and they will learn from you.  No pre-requisite, beginners welcome.   Fees do NOT include yarns, fibers, & fabrics for dyeing. You may bring your own or purchase what you need from the Fiber Garden. Class cost will be based on the length of workshop you choose.  Fees include instruction and use of dyes and equipment.  Class fees are as follows:  Saturday only – $60; Saturday and Sunday - $110.  Fees do NOT include yarns, fibers & fabrics for dyeing. You may bring your own or purchase what you need from the Fiber Garden.  Be sure and indicate the class length you are enrolling for on the registration form. (Note that if you wish to dye plant-based fibers, you MUST select a multi-day workshop option!)  A non-refundable $30 deposit will be due at the time of registration to confirm your space. The remainder of the fee will be paid at the end of your workshop.

Rainbow Dyeing @ the WI Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts

This day will be a color explosion of quick, easy, no-fail, rainbow dye techniques. Spinners, knitters, crocheters and weavers will all enjoy dyeing yarns for their projects. Using simple injection, spot, canning and painting techniques, you will turn a variety of beautiful yarns into an amazing multi-colored rainbow! This class will be a perfect introduction to dyeing; no previous experience needed. Class fee includes a generous supply of beautiful yarns, handouts, dyes, and use of all dyeing equipment. Rigid Heddle Weaving @ the WI Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts

Rigid heddle looms have become a very popular and versatile weaving craze! They provide a perfect introduction to weaving for those looking for greater affordability, simplicity, and portability than the larger floor looms provide. In this workshop you will learn to warp the rigid heddle loom using the direct warping method as well as weave a beautiful scarf to learn the basics of the loom. There will also be time for some demonstrations on additional rigid heddle techniques to show you how to get the most out of this little powerhouse of a loom. Please register directly with the Museum.

This summer weekday weaving workshop offers a choice of three-day or four-days. The four-day workshop will run Friday - Monday and the three-day workshop will run Saturday - Monday.  You will indicate your choice of class length when you register. The four-day workshop provides an additional day of class to give you more time to weave a larger project or multiple projects and take full advantage of your learning experience! Multiple weaving classes will be offered concurrently. The following weaving workshops will be offered this weekend.  You will be asked to select which workshop you\'d like to register for on the registration page. Please view the descriptions on the \"Weaving Workshops\" page and note that we do not teach rigid heddle during this workshop!

Spinner's Color Workshop @ Sievers School of Fiber Arts

Learn to create and manipulate color during all phases of the spinning process including preparation, spinning and plying! We will discuss some very basic color theory and how to apply it in spinning. Using hand cards and drumcarders, blending boards, combs and hackles we will study how to be intentional in your fiber preparation to affect color in your final yarn; learn different spinning methods with dyed braids and colored tops to maximize your color options; and experiment with plying to affect color.

Learn to turn wool into your own unique yarns!  Workshop will explore handcarding, drumcarding, spinning single and multi-ply yarns.  We will also talk about washing fleece, create art batts, and demonstrate some basic dye techniques. No previous spinning experience required.  Length: Full weekend (Friday 3 hours, afternoon or evening, depending on student travel schedules; Saturday 9:30am-5pm; Sunday 9:30am-1:30pm) Workshop fee is $160 for the weekend and includes all materials.  A $40 non-refundable deposit will be due at the time of registration to confirm your space. Rigid Heddle Weaving

  Interested in weaving but don’t want to make the big investment in a floor loom? Rigid heddle looms are affordable and versatile…they are the latest craze in weaving! You may select a one-day or two-day workshop. In the single day workshop we will learn to warp the loom using the direct warping method and weave a simple, yet beautiful, scarf to get you familiar with the loom. After your scarf is completed, Deb will demonstrate some more patterns and techniques using the rigid heddle to show you how you can get more out this little powerhouse of a loom!  Those taking the two-day workshop will plan a second project using some of the techniques demonstrated, then warp and weave a second project. No previous weaving experience required. Looms will be provided or students may bring their own to class. Looms will also be available for purchase for those that want to continue weaving. Materials cost of approximately $20-40. Workshop fee is $60 for the one-day class and $110 for the two-day class plus materials.  A $30 non-refundable deposit will be due at the time of registration to confirm your space.  The remainder of your fee will be paid at the conclusion of your workshop.

The 40 acre property is located 30 miles north of Madison near Devil\'s Lake State Park. This retreat is an opportunity to gather as a spinning community, working at your own skill level on projects of your choice. Deb will be there to coach, guide, and provide encouragement. There is no agenda for this weekend...just come and enjoy doing whatever you want, whenever you want! You may choose to work on spinning yarn for a specific project, experimenting with new fibers, exploring novelty yarns, or just pulling fibers out of your stash. Bring your own fibers, or purchase them at the retreat from Deb’s “fiber shop” that will be on-site. Bring your own wheel or rent one from the Fiber Garden for a small fee. The only pre-requisite for the retreat is that you have some beginning spinning experience. You do not need to be an experienced spinner...\"early career\" spinners are welcome and encouraged!
